Twos

Ages 24–36 months

Two young boys playing on a slide at a playground, one sitting at the bottom and the other walking up, both holding small shovels, with a chain-link fence and parked vehicles in the background.

The Twos program at the Child Care & Learning Center supports children during a period of rapid cognitive, language, and social-emotional growth.

At this stage, children are driven by curiosity — eager to understand how things work and how they fit into the world around them.

Social development in action

Two-year-olds move through important stages of play:

  • Solitary play

  • Parallel play

  • Associative play

As children begin interacting more directly with peers, teachers intentionally guide the development of foundational social skills. Through supported play, children learn to:

  • Take turns

  • Manage big emotions

  • Practice early problem-solving

  • Develop empathy

  • This is a critical stage for building self-regulation and independence.

Growing confidence and independence

Twos are eager to “do it myself.” Teachers encourage self-help skills such as:

  • Dressing and personal care

  • Sitting and eating independently

  • Cleaning up materials

  • Participating in daily routines

Predictable structure and consistent routines provide the security children need to explore confidently. When children know what comes next, they feel capable and in control.

“I’ve been driving my children to CCLC from Culpeper for five years—the care they receive far outweighs the commute.”
